Ragini Chandershekar

Ragini Chandershekar is ranked amongst the finest Bharatanatyam dancers of the younger generation. Trained in Bharatanatyam by her mother Guru Jamuna Krishnan and by other great masters of the dance form, her art reflects her own unique sensibilities. Her dance glows with the rare magic of purity and adherence to the traditional form. While her ‘nritta’ (pure dance) sparkles with the kinetics of movement and space, her ‘abhinaya’ (art of expression) flows into the subtle spaces within.

With a performance career of over 35 years, Ragini has performed at several prestigious festivals, both at home and abroad, winning critical acclaim from connoisseurs and critics for her impeccably pristine and aesthetic presentations. She is a senior empanelled artiste with the ICCR, and has extensively toured Turkey and China under their auspices. In 2006, Ragini performed in the Asia Festival at Barcelona and Madrid. This honour was bestowed on her after she was awarded the Premi Antoni de Montserrart 2006 scholarship of Department de Programmes Educatius, Casa Asia, Barcelona.

In recognition of her brilliant talent as a dynamic performing artiste, she was conferred with the highly prestigious Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar by the Central Sangeet Natak Akademi, the “Lakshmi Vishwanathan Endowment Award” from the Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, the title of “Yuva Kala Bharati” by Bharat Kalachar in Chennai, the Jayadeva Rashtriya Nritya Prathibha Puraskar from the Government of Odisha and the IIDF award for excellence in Bharatanatyam.

Ragini holds a Masters degree in English Literature from the University of Delhi and Masters degree in Public Relations and Advertising.

STREE- A Voice, A Celebration – An exploration of the Feminine Spirit In Bharatanatyam by Smt. Ragini Chandershekar and the senior dancers of the Kalangan Dance Company, New Delhi

“Stree”- The feminine energy is unfolded through the dynamics of music, movement and the spatial kinetics of Bharatanatyam. The piece begins with the female spirit breaking free from the codes of a male-dominated society. She is born free- not one to be chained by the shackles of gender and creed. Treat her not with contempt, but with care; do not be beguiled by her feminity- it holds a storm within!
Free movement and exploration of expressions on contemporary poetry give way to the unabandoned joy and celebration of the effervescent feminine spirit. Traditional Bharatanatyam movements have been juxtaposed with contemporary rhythmic beats with a uniquely refreshing classical twist.
“Stree” celebrates the woman in all her glory- strong, powerful, beautiful, feminine, omnipotent…truly unstoppable!
